Abstract

Bilge keels are commonly utilized on fishing vessels to improve stability; nevertheless, their effect on resistance in calm waters for specific hull types remains insufficiently documented. This research examines the resistance characteristics of a 33.5 m Indonesian tuna longline fishing vessel, both with and without bilge keels, employing a validated Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) methodology. Simulations utilized the steady state Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) equations and were validated against towing tank data at velocities of 3, 6, and 9 knots. The results indicate that the total resistance increases non-linearly with speed for both configurations. The bilge keel equipped configuration consistently produces lower total resistance, with approximately 18% reduction at the design speed of 6 knots. Qualitative flow field analysis associates this trend with a redistribution of near wall velocity and a more gradual pressure recovery in the aft bilge region. These findings suggest that, within the limits of the investigated configuration, bilge keels may influence hydrodynamic performance beyond their conventional role in stability, providing a reference for the design of energy efficient fishing vessels.
