Abstract

A father’s absence is a family circumstance that can affect a child’s emotional development, self-concept, and interpersonal relationships. Although this phenomenon has been extensively studied, most previous research has focused primarily on quantitative relationships between variables; consequently, children’s subjective experiences in interpreting communication with their fathers from a family communication perspective have not yet been thoroughly examined. This study examines the experiences of children who have experienced a father’s absence by highlighting how their father’s communication is understood and interpreted in their lives. This study employs a qualitative approach using the phenomenological method. Data were collected through semi-structured in-depth interviews with seven informants aged 18–24 who had experienced their father’s physical and/or emotional absence over an extended period. Data analysis was conducted using Colaizzi’s phenomenological stages, with attachment theory serving as the conceptual foundation. The results indicate that a father’s absence is not only interpreted as the physical absence of a father figure but is also reflected in a lack of communication, attention, emotional support, and involvement in the child’s life. These experiences influence how the informants view themselves, build interpersonal relationships, and interpret the role of the father. This study confirms that the quality of a father’s communication plays a crucial role in shaping a child’s emotional experiences and contributes to the development of family communication research, particularly regarding the experiences of children who have experienced a father’s absence. Keywords: father’s absence; father-child communication; family communication; children’s experiences.
