Abstract
This study analyzes the effects of economic growth, fossil energy consumption, and renewable energy consumption on CO₂ emissions in eight Developing-8 (D-8) member countries from 1990 to 2024. Utilizing the Panel Quantile Regression (PQR) method at the 0.25, 0.50, and 0.75 quantiles, the results confirm the validity of the inverted U-shaped Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis across all quantiles. Fossil energy consumption exhibits a significant positive effect on emissions. Meanwhile, renewable energy consumption unexpectedly shows a positive impact, particularly in the low and medium emission quantiles. These findings indicate that renewable energy in D-8 countries has not yet optimally replaced the role of fossil fuels in reducing carbon emissions. Therefore, strategic policies are required to reduce fossil fuel dependency and enhance the scale and efficiency of renewable energy utilization to support sustainable development.
