Abstract

Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) is widely recognized as an important source of development financing because it contributes to economic growth, facilitates technology transfer, and enhances productivity in developing economies. This study investigates the influence of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), the Human Development Index (HDI), and interest rates on FDI inflows across Indonesia, India, Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam over the 2007-2024 period. The analysis is based on secondary data obtained from the World Bank, Trading Economics, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Malaysian Human Development Index, and Statistics Indonesia. Panel data regression was performed using EViews 12. The empirical findings indicate that HDI exerts a statistically significant negative effect on FDI, whereas GDP and interest rates do not have a significant individual impact. Nevertheless, when considered jointly, GDP, HDI, and interest rates significantly explain variations in FDI. These results imply that FDI inflows are shaped not only by macroeconomic indicators but also by broader structural and institutional conditions.
