Abstract

Price stability is a cornerstone of a country’s economy because it influences the consumption, savings, and investment decisions of both households and businesses. Price instability resulting from fluctuations in the money supply can hinder the efficient allocation of resources and exacerbate income inequality. This study aims to analyze the factors influencing the money supply (M2) in Japan. The method used is the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) model with annual data from 1986 to 2024. The independent variables include interest rates, inflation, the yen exchange rate, and interaction terms between interest rates and inflation. The results show that in the short run, interest rates have a negative and significant effect in the current period and the second lag, while inflation has a positive and significant effect from the current period through the third lag. The yen exchange rate has no significant effect in the current period and the first lag, but has a positive and significant effect in the second and third lags. The interaction term between interest rates and inflation has no significant effect in the current period and the first lag, but has a positive and significant effect in the second and third lags. Meanwhile, in the long run, none of the variables show a significant effect on the money supply in Japan.
