Abstract
The Gender Development Index (GDI) is an important indicator for measuring equality in development achievements between men and women. Despite its upward trend, the GDI in Eastern Indonesia continues to face disparities due to limited educational attainment, low female labor force participation, and persistent poverty. This study aims to examine the effects of women's Expected Years of Schooling (EYS), Female Labor Force Participation Rate (FLFPR), and poverty on the Gender Development Index, while also investigating the moderating role of women's Expected Years of Schooling. The study employs panel data obtained from Statistics Indonesia (BPS), covering 12 provinces in Eastern Indonesia during the 2015-2024 period, with a total of 120 observations. Data were analyzed using the Fixed Effect Model. The results indicate that women's Expected Years of Schooling and GRDP as a control variable have a positive and significant effect on the GDI, whereas the Female Labor Force Participation Rate and poverty have no significant effect. However, the Average Marginal Effect analysis reveals that the interaction between women's Expected Years of Schooling and the Female Labor Force Participation Rate has a positive and significant effect at the 15% significance level, indicating that women's Expected Years of Schooling acts as a quasi-moderating variable. These findings suggest that increasing female labor force participation contributes more effectively to gender development when supported by higher educational attainment.
