Abstract

Limited agricultural land has encouraged the adoption of Internet of Things (IoT)-based hydroponic systems. However, selecting an optimal communication protocol remains a major challenge because it affects the reliability and efficiency of real-time data transmission. This study aims to design a Smart Hydroponic system architecture utilizing the Constrained Application Protocol (CoAP) and WebSocket, as well as to compare their performance based on Quality of Service (QoS) parameters, including latency , jitter, throughput, and packet loss. The proposed system employs a three-layer architecture consisting of the IoT Device, Communication Protocol, and Backend Server, and is evaluated under two testing scenarios: normal operating conditions and payload size variations of 512 byte, 1024 byte, and 2048 byte. The results show that, under normal operating conditions, CoAP achieved better performance with a latency of 269.45 ms, jitter of 238.45 ms, throughput of 0.09 kbps, and packet loss of 15.69%, whereas WebSocket recorded a latency of 996.61 ms, jitter of 1,339.93 ms, throughput of 0.31 kbps, and packet loss of 17.93%. Conversely, under payload variation testing, WebSocket demonstrated better performance for large data transmissions, while CoAP experienced communication failure at a payload size of 2048 byte, resulting in 67.79% packet loss due to payload truncation caused by the packet segmentation mechanism, which subsequently led to a parsing error on the server. Based on these findings, CoAP performs better under normal operating conditions with small payloads of less than 1 KB, whereas WebSocket demonstrates superior performance for transmitting payloads larger than 1 KB.
