Abstract
This study aims to understand how a retired couple makes meaning of financial security from their pension funds after entering retirement. Although both informants receive pension funds from formal institutions, financial security is not solely determined by the availability of funds. Using a qualitative method with an interpretive paradigm and Husserl's phenomenological approach, this study explores the lived experience of two main informants, a husband and wife, with their children involved as supporting sources for triangulation. Data were obtained through in-depth interviews and analyzed through the stages of epoche, transcendental reduction, noema-noesis, intentional analysis, and eidetic reduction. The results show that the husband makes meaning of financial security through direct control over pension fund management, as a response to uncertainty and information asymmetry toward the managing institution. In contrast, the wife makes meaning of financial security through relational trust in her husband, shaped by social gender constructions embedded in Indonesian household roles. These findings indicate that bounded rationality, encompassing dimensions of agency theory, plays an important role in explaining why pension fund accounting alone is insufficient to produce a sense of financial security at the individual level.
