Abstract
Geriatric patients generally experience physiological changes that make them susceptible to multimorbidity, which increases the risk of polypharmacy. Furthermore, pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic changes due to aging can increase the risk of adverse drug reactions. This study aims to identify potentially inappropriate medication use in geriatric patients in the outpatient unit of Persahabatan General Hospital in 2024 based on the 2023 Beers Criteria, and to analyze its relationship with patient characteristics such as age, gender, number of diagnoses, and number of medications used. This study was conducted from July 2025-February 2026 using a cross-sectional study design. The study sample consisted of 96 new geriatric patients selected using consecutive sampling. Data were analyzed univariately and bivariately using the Chi-square test. The results showed that the proportion of potentially inappropriate medication use in geriatric patients was 13.11%, with category 1 (49.71%) as the most frequently identified medication category. A correlation was found between the number of diagnoses (p=0.009*; OR=3.871) and the number of medications used (p=<0.001*; OR=7.632) and the incidence. These findings indicate that multimorbidity increases the risk 3.8 times, while polypharmacy increases the risk 7.6 times of potentially inappropriate medication use incidents in geriatric patients.
