Abstract
This research is driven by rapid Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) developments, yet gaps remain between independent filament extrusion and printing parameter optimization. This study aims to analyze filament extrusion effects and optimize 3D printing parameters for PLA and Nylon mechanical properties using Taguchi L27. Methodology involves extruding pellets into filaments and printing ASTM D638 tensile specimens with variations in temperature, nozzle diameter, and printing speed. Results show optimal filaments obtained at extrusion temperatures of 190°C for PLA and 250°C for Nylon. In 3D printing, temperature is a critical factor with Nylon experiencing total failure below 220°C.. Signal to Noise (S/N) Ratio analysis indicates PLA's optimal combination is 0.6 mm nozzle, 220°C temperature, and 70 mm/s speed, yielding 32.78 dB S/N Ratio (UTS: 43.558 MPa). For Nylon, optimal parameters are 0.6 mm nozzle, 240°C temperature, and 30 mm/s speed, yielding 37.45 dB S/N Ratio (UTS: 74.575 MPa). In conclusion, Nylon possesses significantly superior strength but higher parameter sensitivity than PLA. These findings benefit the manufacturing industry by increasing production efficiency and reducing trial-and-error when using PLA and Nylon materials. This study successfully bridges the gap between material preparation and final product optimization in additive manufacturing.
