Abstract

The connecting rod is a critical component in internal combustion engines that functions to transmit force from the piston to the crankshaft. This component operates under high cyclic loading conditions, which makes it susceptible to fatigue failure. This study aims to analyze and compare the fatigue strength, stress distribution, safety factor, and fatigue life of a connecting rod using different materials, namely AISI 4340, 42CrMo4, and Aluminum 7075, through the Finite Element Method (FEM). The research was conducted by developing a three-dimensional geometric model based on a Honda Brio connecting rod, followed by numerical simulation using ANSYS 2023 R1. The analysis was performed under transient structural conditions with a rotational speed of 4800 rpm and a gas pressure force of 18,700 N. To ensure the accuracy of the results, a mesh convergence study was carried out, resulting in an optimal element size of 0.94 mm. The simulation results indicate that all materials exhibit von Mises stress values below their respective yield strengths, indicating safe operation against plastic deformation. Both AISI 4340 and 42CrMo4 materials achieve a fatigue life of up to 10⁷ cycles, indicating infinite life within the scope of the analysis. In contrast, Aluminum 7075 shows lower performance under cyclic loading, with critical regions identified on the component. Based on the safety factor evaluation, 42CrMo4 demonstrates the highest level of safety among the materials studied, making it the most suitable candidate for connecting rod applications under the given loading conditions.
