Abstract

The development of the TikTok social media platform has given rise to usergenerated content phenomena that influence how audiences interpret the representation of urban spaces. One phenomenon that has drawn attention is the content under the hashtag #TheQuiet by creator @urrofi_, which features Indonesian cities in a silent atmosphere and represents them as "dead cities." This research aims to analyze how Generation Z audiences receive, interpret, and negotiate this visual representation of the cities. The theory applied is Stuart Hall’s encoding-decoding Reception Analysis model. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach, with data collection methods comprising in-depth interviews with 10 Generation Z informants and documentation studies. The findings indicate that the audience is divided into three reading positions. First, the DominantHegemonic position, where audience with a visual arts background and non-local viewers fully accept the message as a work of art and a means of escapism from the city's hustle and bustle. Second, the Negotiated position, where audience with analytical literacy enjoy the visual aesthetics but logically negotiate its meaning, realizing the time manipulation done solely for entertainment purposes. Third, the Oppositional position, where local residents and field workers strongly reject the "dead city" narrative, viewing it as a distortion of reality and a stigmatization that contradicts the dynamic empirical conditions of the streets.
