Abstract

The number of cesarean sections in Indonesia continues to increase, accompanied by the risk of SSI, especially in patients with hyperglycemia who have impaired wound healing. The appropriateness of prophylactic antibiotic administration and perioperative glycemic control may influence postoperative infection outcomes. This study aimed to evaluate the appropriateness of prophylactic antibiotic use in hyperglycemic patients undergoing caesarean section. This study was an observational study with retrospective medical record data collection using a cross sectional design, presented in descriptive and analytical forms using Fisher's Exact test, with a sample size of five patients. This study showed that three caesarean section patients with hyperglycemia were in the late adult age group, two patients had a diagnosis of uterine scar and a history of one caesarean section (two patients) and had never undergone a caesarean section (two patients). Four patients had postoperative random blood glucose levels within normal limits, but four patients had relatively high HbA1c levels. No significant relationship was found between postoperative random blood glucose, or HbA1c and the incidence of SSI (p-value = 1.000), nor between the appropriateness of prophylactic antibiotics and the incidence of SSI (p-value = 0.400). Blood glucose profiles and the appropriateness of prophylactic antibiotic administration in caesarean section patients with hyperglycemia did not show a significant association with the occurrence of SSI, suggesting that the occurrence of infections may be influenced by the limited sample size.
