Abstract
Insufficient breast milk production during the early postpartum period is a common barrier that may compromise the success of exclusive breastfeeding. Various non-pharmacological strategies can be applied to enhance breast milk output, including breast stimulation techniques. This study aimed to examine the effect of a combination of Woolwich massage and warm compress therapy on breast milk production among primiparous mothers. A quasi-experimental design with a one-group pretest–posttest approach was employed. The study involved 30 postpartum mothers selected through purposive sampling based on predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria, with the sample size calculated using the formula by Isaac and Michael. The intervention consisted of Woolwich massage combined with warm compress application, each administered for 15 minutes, twice daily over a three-day period during morning and evening sessions. Breast milk production was measured before and after the intervention using manual expression for 10 minutes on each breast. The findings indicated that most participants were young mothers with a mean age of 22 years, had a secondary education level, were unemployed, and had no prior experience in breast care before the postpartum period. The mean volume of breast milk production increased by 27.86 mL, from 0.44 mL prior to the intervention to 28.30 mL following the intervention. Statistical analysis using the Wilcoxon test demonstrated a significant difference in breast milk production before and after the intervention (p = 0.000; p < 0.05). In conclusion, the combination of Woolwich massage and warm compress therapy has a significant effect on increasing breast milk production in primiparous postpartum mothers.
