Abstract
This study originates from the phenomenon of social gaming, in which online games do not only function as entertainment but also as a medium for fulfilling social interaction needs. This study aims to examine the experiences of interpersonal communication closeness formed among members of the @txtfromvalorant community within the online game Valorant. This study employs a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach to explore the subjective experiences of the informants. Data collection was conducted through in-depth interviews with five informants selected using the snowball sampling technique, supported by participant observation. The analysis uses Social Penetration Theory by Altman and Taylor and the Relationship Stages Model by DeVito, while the concept of Computer-Mediated Communication (CMC) is also used as a bridge for digitally mediated individual communication. The results show that Valorant functions effectively as an initial bridge that minimizes communication barriers. Relationship closeness develops progressively toward the stage of intimacy, marked by deep self-disclosure that includes sensitive topics such as family and romantic issues. The integration of multiple platforms like Valorant, Discord, and the social media platform X creates a complete communication ecosystem. This study concludes that interpersonal relationships formed through the game Valorant have the level of depth equal to, or even greater than, face-to-face relationships, supported by reciprocity and strong communication openness in addressing conflicts.
