Abstract

The primary objective of this research is to evaluate how machining variables specifically spindle speed, depth of cut, and feed rate impact the surface roughness of ST42 steel during conventional turning with carbide inserts. The experiments utilized cylindrical ST42 steel specimens 30 mm in diameter, which were processed under dry machining conditions on a C6240A lathe. The experimental design involved varying spindle speeds (210, 250, 300, and 360 rpm), depths of cut (0.1, 0.3, and 0.5 mm), and feed rates (0.124, 0.248, and 0.496 mm/rev). Surface roughness (Ra) measurements were acquired via a Mitutoyo SJ-301 tester, followed by data analysis using Three-Way ANOVA. Findings reveal that feed rate is the most significant factor influencing surface roughness, contributing 69.4%, whereas depth of cut and spindle speed contributed 9.8% and 1.5%, respectively. The finest surface finish (Ra 2.18 μm) was obtained using an optimal combination of 360 rpm spindle speed, 0.1 mm depth of cut, and 0.124 mm/rev feed rate. Consequently, to achieve superior surface quality on ST42 steel, this study suggests employing a lower feed rate in conjunction with a higher spindle speed.
