Abstract
Background: Decline in muscle strength is a common physiological change in older adults and may lead to reduced functional capacity, mobility, and independence in daily activities. Global muscle strength, which includes handgrip strength, back muscle strength, and lower limb muscle strength, is influenced by various factors such as age, sex, and level of physical activity. Older adults living in social care institutions are at risk of decreased physical activity, which may accelerate the decline in muscle strength. Objective: This study aimed to describe global muscle strength in older adults at Panti Sosial Tresna Werdha Budi Mulia 3. Methods: This study employed a quantitative descriptive design with a cross-sectional approach. The study involved 79 older adults selected based on predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Muscle strength was measured using a Camry EH101 handgrip dynamometer to assess handgrip strength and a back and leg dynamometer to assess back and lower limb muscle strength. Results: The results showed that the majority of older adults had weak handgrip strength, accounting for 83.5% of the respondents. Meanwhile, back muscle strength and lower limb muscle strength were predominantly classified as moderate, at 83.5% and 87.3%, respectively. Conclusion: Global muscle strength among older adults at Panti Sosial Tresna Werdha Budi Mulia 3 was characterized by a predominance of weak handgrip strength, while back and lower limb muscle strength were mostly in the moderate category. These findings indicate the need for efforts to maintain and enhance physical activity to preserve muscle strength and physical function in older adults.
