Abstract

Longitudinal strength is one of the important aspects in the design and evaluation of ship structures because it is directly related to the ship's ability to withstand bending moments due to loading conditions during operation. The case of a general cargo ship breaking shows that structural failure can occur if the structural response is unable to withstand the combination of loads acting on it. This study aims to analyze the longitudinal strength of ships in the case of general cargo ship failure using static structural analysis based on the finite element method (FEM) in ANSYS Mechanical to determine the equivalent stress values occurring in the ship hull structure. There are two variations used in this analysis, namely the addition of a load of 10% - 100% of the weight of the cargo space of one ship, and the wave conditions of the ship, namely when the ship is hogging and sagging. The results show that the maximum equivalent stress occurs in hogging wave conditions with a load variation of 80%, resulting in a stress value of 190.83 MPa. The results of this analysis were validated based on BKI regulations, whereby the maximum stress value must not exceed the allowable stress value, which was calculated to be 162.75 MPa, and the safety factor must be greater than 1.
