Abstract

This study analyzes the effect of welding current variation in the Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) process on the tensile strength of ASTM A36 butt-joint weldments with a double V-groove. Welding was carried out using current levels of 60 A, 80 A, and 100 A with ER70S-6 filler wire and CO₂ shielding gas. Tensile testing followed the ASTM E8M standard, with three specimens for each current level. The results show that the highest average Ultimate Tensile Strength (UTS) was obtained at 60 A, reaching 458.59 MPa, and then decreased at 80 A to 436.58 MPa and at 100 A to 431.82 MPa. The Yield Strength (YS) exhibited a similar trend, with values of 316.08 MPa (60 A), 306.62 MPa (80 A), and 305.65 MPa (100 A). All specimens fractured in the base metal, indicating that the weld region was not the weakest part under tensile loading. Based on these results, 60 A is considered the best welding current condition in this study for achieving the highest tensile strength based on UTS.
