Abstract
Sliding wear is one of the most common surface degradation mechanisms occurring in mechanical components subjected to repeated sliding contact. This study aims to analyze and compare the sliding wear characteristics of AISI 440C, AISI 431, AISI 630, M50, and Stellite 6 using the Finite Element Analysis (FEA) method. Simulations were performed using a ball-on-disc configuration with contact load variations of 10 N, 20 N, and 30 N. The wear model was based on Archard’s law with a plastic deformation approach. The results show that increasing contact load generally increases wear depth, surface deformation, and wear volume for all materials, while promoting a transition in wear mechanisms from scratching at low loads to ploughing at higher loads. AISI 431 exhibits the shallowest wear depth and the most controlled surface deformation, indicating superior local wear resistance. In contrast, AISI 440C produces the highest wear due to the dominance of ploughing and severe plastic deformation. AISI 630 and Stellite 6 demonstrate intermediate wear performance. Although M50 shows a moderate wear depth, it exhibits the lowest and most stable wear volume with increasing load. Overall, sliding wear resistance is governed by stress distribution and plastic deformation behavior rather than hardness alone.
