Abstract

This research investigates the effect of pressure angle variation (20° and 27°) on the vibration characteristics of a spur gear pair, since gear vibration may increase noise and reduce transmission reliability. Experiments were conducted on a module-3, 18-tooth spur gear set under no-load conditions, using an MPU6050 accelerometer to measure vibration and an FC-03 keyphasor sensor to provide rotational reference. Vibration data were collected at 200, 300, and 400 rpm, then evaluated in the time domain using RMS values and in the frequency domain using FFT to identify the Gear Mesh Frequency (GMF) and sideband patterns. In addition, a simplified 1-DOF dynamic model was developed in MATLAB/Simulink to compare response trends with the experimental results. The findings show that vibration amplitude increases with rotational speed, and the 27° pressure angle consistently produces lower vibration levels than the 20° pressure angle across all tested speeds. Therefore, within the tested setup, the 27° pressure angle provides better vibration performance.
