Abstract
Obesity triggers oxidative stress and inflammation in the liver, leading to hepatocyte damage and the leakage of intracellular enzymes such as SGOT and SGPT. Moringa oleifera fruits contain high of flavonoids, which act as potent antioxidants and hepatoprotective agents. This study aimed to determine the hepatoprotective effect of Moringa oleifera fruit extract on liver SGOT and SGPT levels in obesity-induced Sprague Dawley rats. The results provide scientific evidence for the use of Moringa oleifera as an alternative therapy for liver protection, especially in regions with limited access to conventional healthcare. This true experimental study used 30 Sprague Dawley rats divided into five groups: K1 (normal), K2 (negative control/high-fat diet), K3 (positive control/Vitamin C), K4 (500 mg/kgBW/day extract), and K5 (500 mg/kgBW twice daily extract). Obesity was induced via a high-fat diet for seven weeks, followed by two weeks of treatment. Enzyme levels were measured using a spectrophotometer. K2 showed significantly higher SGOT (0.347 ± 0.065 U/L) and SGPT (0.245 ± 0.024 U/L) levels compared to K1 (p < 0.05). Treatment with Moringa oleifera extract in K4 and K5 significantly reduced these levels (p < 0.05), bringing them close to normal values. No significant difference was found between the once-daily and twice- daily dosages. Moringa oleifera fruit extract effectively exerts a hepatoprotective effect by lowering SGOT and SGPT levels in obese rat models.
