Abstract
Malassezia furfur is a lipophilic fungus that plays a role in various skin diseases, such as pityriasis versicolor and seborrheic dermatitis. Long-term use of synthetic antifungals has the potential to cause side effects and resistance, so alternative natural ingredients are needed. The snake plant (Sansevieria trifasciata) is known to contain various bioactive compounds with potential antifungal properties. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of snake plant leaf extract in inhibiting the growth of Malassezia furfur in vitro and to determine the most effective extract concentration. This research was classified as a true experimental study conducted in vitro in a laboratory setting using a post-test only control group design. Antifungal activity was assessed using agar well diffusion method, with extract concentrations of 10%, 15%, 20%, 25% and 30% as independent variables, the control variables consisted of 2% ketoconazole as positive control, and distilled water as a negative control, while the dependent variable was the growth of M. furfur growth. Statistical analysis was performed using the Kruskal-Wallis test followed by the Mann Whitney Post-Hoc test. Inhibition zones were observed at 24 and 48 hours. The results showed that snake plant leaf extract was able to inhibit the growth of M. furfur. The most effective extract concentration was 25%, with an average inhibition zone diameter of 7.07 at 24 hours, and showed significant differences compared to other concentrations.
