Abstract
Objective: Low back pain (LBP) is a common musculoskeletal disorder among nursing personnel and contributes substantially to the global burden of disability. Ergonomic factors, particularly working posture and manual handling activities, are considered potential contributors to an increased risk of LBP. This study aimed to analyze the association between ergonomic factors and the occurrence of low back pain among inpatient nurses at Dr. Mintohardjo Naval Hospital. Methods: This study employed a quantitative observational design with a cross-sectional approach. The study sample consisted of 55 inpatient nurses who met the inclusion criteria. Complaints of low back pain were assessed using the Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire (NMQ), while ergonomic risk was evaluated through direct observation of working posture using the Rapid Entire Body Assessment (REBA) method. The association between ergonomic factors and the occurrence of low back pain was analyzed using the chi-square test. Results: Most respondents were aged ≥40 years (43.6%), had an overweight nutritional status (60.0%), and had a working duration of more than 10 years (56.4%). Low back pain was reported by 9 nurses (16.4%). Ergonomic assessment showed that the majority of respondents were classified as having a moderate ergonomic risk (65.5%). The chi-square analysis indicated no statistically significant association between REBA-based ergonomic risk categories and the occurrence of low back pain (p = 0.848). The distribution of low back pain cases did not demonstrate a consistent statistically significant pattern. Conclusion There was no statistically significant association between ergonomic risk based on REBA assessment and the occurrence of low back pain among inpatient nurses at Dr. Mintohardjo Naval Hospital. These findings suggest that low back pain among nurses may be influenced by factors beyond ergonomic aspects, including work organization, physical activity, individual physical fitness, and a supportive work environment.
