Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is one of the major causes of male infertility through increased oxidative stress that damages the membrane, DNA, and mitochondrial structure of spermatozoa. Pineapple stem (Ananas comosus (L.) Merr.) contains flavonoids and bromelain, both of which act as antioxidants and may improve sperm quality. This study aims to analyze the effect of pineapple stem extract on the total sperm count of alloxan-induced diabetic male Wistar rats. This experimental research employed a post-test only control group design with five groups: negative control, positive control, and three treatment groups receiving pineapple stem extract at concentrations of 50%, 75%, and 100%. The results showed not significant differences in total sperm count (p > 0.05). However, the 100% concentration showed the most biologically optimal increase. This study concludes that pineapple stem extract has the potential to improve total sperm count in diabetic male rats, particularly at the 100% concentration.
