Abstract
The Human Development Index (HDI), which integrates life expectancy, community well-being, and education, serves as a measure of a nation's progress and reflects the effectiveness of economic policies on quality of life. West Sulawesi Province, with an HDI score of 69.80, ranks 31st out of 34 provinces in Indonesia, indicating that human development in this region is relatively low compared to other areas. This study examines the influence of government expenditure in the education sector, government expenditure in the health sector, and Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) on HDI in West Sulawesi Province, using data from six districts/cities over the period 2016–2023 analyzed through panel data regression methods. The results show that government expenditure in the education sector has a significant negative effect on HDI in West Sulawesi Province. Government expenditure in the health sector does not have a significant effect on HDI. The GRDP variable has a significant positive effect on HDI in West Sulawesi Province. The simultaneous testing results indicate that all variables influence HDI in West Sulawesi Province. Based on these findings, it is hoped that the government can promote improvements and equal distribution of HDI.
