Abstract
This study aims to analyze fatigue behavior and crack initiation potential on the frame bracket of the hydraulic cylinder in the discharging coil machine, which is used in the lifting process of wire rods in the steel manufacturing industry. This component plays a crucial role in supporting the load from the scissor lift mechanism and must therefore withstand repeated loading. The finite element method (FEM) is employed to evaluate the structural response in terms of Von Mises stress, deformation, fatigue life, and potential fracture initiation using the fracture tool feature in ANSYS. Simulation results show that the structure is capable of withstanding a maximum load of 45,112 N with a maximum v Mises stress of 86.05 MPa, total deformation of 0.0686 mm, and a safety factor against yielding of 2.15. Fatigue analysis indicates that the component is in the infinite life zone with a constant fatigue life of 1.189 × 10⁶ cycles and a fatigue safety factor above 2 across all load variations. However, the fracture analysis shows that the stress intensity factor (K₁) reaches 1.8746 MPa√mm, which exceeds the material’s fracture toughness of 1.28 MPa√mm, indicating a risk of sudden fracture failure if initial cracks are present. Therefore, the occurrence of periodic cracks in the field is likely caused by cyclic loading, with the initial crack suspected to have been triggered by an incident involving a dropped wire rod or an impact that induced micro-damage in the structure.
