Abstract

The vast marine territory of Indonesia offers substantial potential in the fisheries sector. However, the quality and shelf life of fish catches are still constrained by the limited availability of environmentally friendly and energy-efficient refrigeration technology. This study aims to evaluate the performance of a two-stage cascade refrigeration cycle using a combination of R744 (CO₂) and R717 (NH₃) refrigerants for fishing vessel refrigeration applications. The analysis was conducted through thermodynamic simulations using EES and REFPROP software, with variations in pressure and temperature parameters. The results show that the R744/R717 cascade system provides more stable performance compared to a single-stage refrigeration system, achieving a maximum COP of 1,30 at a condenser temperature of 38°C and a mass flow rate of 0,09 kg/s. The system also reduces compressor power consumption by up to 16,15 kW and lowers the TEWI to 314 tons of CO₂ at a heat exchanger pressure of 0,34 MPa. Therefore, the two-stage R744/R717 cascade system offers improved energy efficiency and supports carbon emission reduction, making it suitable for fishing vessel refrigeration systems.
