Abstract
Improving the efficiency of ship propulsion systems is a key effort in supporting greenhouse gas reduction targets in the maritime sector. One of the technologies utilized is the energy saving device (ESD), specifically the pre-swirl duct (PSD), which functions to optimize fluid flow before it reaches the propeller. This study aims to analyze the effect of adding a pre-swirl duct on the propulsion performance of the KCS ship, focusing on thrust, torque, and propeller efficiency. The research method involves numerical simulation using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) through the SimScale platform. The ship model was tested in several configurations: bare hull, pre-swirl stator (PSS), and a combination of PSS with PSDs of 0.55D, 0.7D, and 1D diameters. Each configuration was simulated under four different flow velocities, and the results were validated against existing literature data. Simulation results show that the addition of a PSD significantly enhances propulsion performance, with the 1D PSD model achieving up to a 27% efficiency improvement at a flow velocity of 2.196 m/s. Velocity contours also reveal more uniform and controlled flow behind the propeller, which can reduce vibrations and extend the lifespan of the propulsion system. These findings support the application of PSD as a practical solution for improving ship energy efficiency without major modifications to the main hull design. In contrast, the JBC exhibited a more moderate thrust improvement (21%) and a lower torque increase (12%), indicating better hydrodynamic stability. This comparison confirms that hull form and wake characteristics significantly affect the response to ESDs. Additionally, fuel consumption analysis was conducted to support the assessment of operational efficiency.
