Abstract
Catalonia is an autonomous region in northeastern Spain that possesses a strong cultural and political identity, along with a governmental structure that resembles that of a sovereign state. Since the Spanish Constitutional Court revoked parts of Catalonia’s autonomous status in 2010, efforts in protodiplomacy by both the Catalan government and civil society have intensified, particularly following the 2017 independence referendum. This study aims to analyze the role of FC Barcelona in supporting Catalan protodiplomacy during the period of 2019 to 2021. The research draws upon Clive Archer’s role theory, Alexander Kuznetsov and Panayotis Soldatos' protodiplomacy theory, and Benedict Anderson’s concept of imagined community, in order to understand how non-state entities such as football clubs can participate in international relations. The research method employed is descriptive qualitative, with data collected primarily through literature study and interviews. The findings indicate that FC Barcelona consistently assumes the role of a non-state actor in supporting Catalan protodiplomacy. The club engages in various symbolic actions on the international football stage that express Catalonia’s identity and political aspirations. Furthermore, FC Barcelona contributes to the reinforcement of the imagined community by promoting collective symbols such as language, flags, and historical narratives. Despite limitations imposed by sports regulations and political pressure from the Spanish central government, FC Barcelona remains a strategic representation of Catalonia’s identity struggle on the global stage.
