Abstract

This research examines how fashion is utilized as a visual political strategy to deconstruct traditional gender norms within the international fashion industry, with a particular focus on the works of Yves Saint Laurent. Employing a postmodern approach grounded in Judith Butler's theory of gender performativity and Christina Rowley's concept of the politics of the visual, this research positions fashion as a site of socio-political meaning contestation and an arena for articulating fluid and subversive gender identities. Through a qualitative approach and descriptive-narrative method, the study analyzes how iconic designs such as Le Smoking (1966) and Scandal (1971) function as symbolic resistance against hegemonic construction of masculinity and feminity. The aim of this research is to critically explore how Yves Saint Laurent leveraged fashion aesthetics as a tool of visual emancipation, capable of disrupting binary gender representations within the global patriarchal order, producing political meaning, expanding gender equality discourse, and reflecting shifts in international social norms. The findings reveal that Yves Saint Laurent strategically challenged gender boundaries by creating new visual symbols that enable women to negotiate power within the public sphere. This study concludes that Saint Laurent's contribution holds political significance, establishing fashion as a cultural site of resistance that supports social transformation and fosters the development of more inclusive international norms regarding gender representation.
