Abstract

As one of the world’s major economic powers, China continues to expand its influence through various means, including participation in multilateral trade agreements such as the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). China’s application for membership in 2021 reflects a strategic motivation behind its efforts to integrate into the Asia-Pacific economic architecture. This research aims to analyze China’s political-economic interests in the process of CPTPP accession during the 2020–2021 period. The study adopts a qualitative explanatory approach, using literature review and interviews as data collection methods. The main theoretical framework applied is the Developmentalist State Theory, supported by concepts of international economic cooperation and political economy interests. The findings reveal that China’s CPTPP application is driven by two main factors: first, internal dynamics such as domestic economic slowdown and the need to modernize market regulations; and second, external pressures such as U.S. dominance in the Indo-Pacific and China's efforts to balance global influence. The process also highlights China’s intention to reposition itself as a proponent of free trade and economic reform. In conclusion, China’s application to join the CPTPP represents a strategic move to maintain national economic stability, enhance global competitiveness, and strengthen its role as a key actor in the global economic order.
