Abstract
This study aims to evaluate the effect of tamarind leaf extract (Tamarindus indica L.) on the total sperm count in male white rats (Rattus norvegicus) induced with diabetes mellitus through alloxan. Diabetes mellitus is known to cause disturbances in male reproductive function, including reduced sperm quality and quantity. Tamarind leaf extract has antioxidant properties that can protect cells from oxidative damage. The methodology used was an experimental study with a post-test only control group design. Thirty male Wistar rats aged 10–12 weeks were randomly divided into five groups: one negative control group, one positive control group, and three treatment groups, each given tamarind leaf extract at different doses. After 38 days of treatment, the total sperm count was analyzed using a microscope. The results showed that rats given tamarind leaf extract experienced a significant increase in total sperm count compared to the control group. Statistical analysis using One-Way ANOVA showed a p-value < 0.05, indicating a significant difference between groups. The optimal dose was found in the group receiving 150 mg/kgBW, where the highest increase in sperm count was observed compared to the control group.
