Abstract
In 2022, there were 24 million people worldwide living with schizophrenia, and the number of individuals affected by this condition continues to increase each year. Schizophrenia is a complex psychiatric condition marked by a range of symptoms such as disorganized thoughts, hallucinations, delusional beliefs, and diminished social functioning. Improper or irrational use of medications can compromise treatment outcomes, potentially leading to increased side effects, harmful drug interactions, recurrence of symptoms, and a decline in healthcare quality. This research was conducted to assess the rational use of antipsychotic medications among individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia at Dr. Soeharto Heerdjan Mental Hospital. The evaluation was based on four essential parameters: correct patient, appropriate indication, suitable drug, and accurate dosage. Employing a cross-sectional observational design, the study utilized retrospective data sourced from patient medical records. Findings indicated full appropriateness (100%) in terms of patient selection and indication, 98.55% in drug choice, and only 68.12% in dosage accuracy. These results reveal that instances of irrational antipsychotic prescribing persist within the hospital, with an overall rational drug use score of 91.67% recorded in 2024
