Abstract
Excavators are heavy equipment used to help human limitations in doing work. Which is commonly used to dig or transport materials such as soil, sand, coal, and others. The boom is an important component in an excavator, which is because the boom supports the overall performance of the arm, and bucket. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the structural strength and fatigue life of the excavator boom using the finite element method (FEM). Simulations were carried out at three positions namely maximum height, maximum flat, and maximum depth. then the analysis is carried out using ANSYS 2022 R1 software. The results showed that the maximum stresses on the excavator boom were 325.96 MPa, 356.2 MPa and 245.43 MPa, respectively. Since the yield strength of the material on the excavator boom is 400 MPa, it can be concluded that the safety factor of the boom is still within safe limits. Fatigue life of the boom recorded in all three positions is 893,680 cycles, 682,120 cycles and 4,000,000 cycles or equivalent to the fatigue life of the excavator boom, namely, 4.5 years, 3.5 years, and 20 years.
