Abstract

PT INKA (Persero) modified the design of the Electric Rail Train retrofit wheel to optimize the fabrication process. Therefore, this study aims to analyse the strength and fatigue life of the wheel due to contact with the rail using the Finite Element Method (FEM). The simulation was conducted by modelling the dynamic contact between the wheel and the rail, where the wheel rotates one time over a 3-meter long straight track. The analysis was conducted using ANSYS 2022 R1 software with the transient structural toolbox, while the loading refers to the EN 13979 1:2020 standard. The results showed that the maximum stress on the wheel web reached 38,98 MPa, while that on the wheel tread reached 334.6 MPa. Fatigue life of the wheel was recorded at 107 cycles on the web, while on the tread it was recorded at 411,100 cycles or equivalent to 1,101.7 km of mileage. The maximum factor of safety for yield strength was 11.945 on the web and 1.4943 on the tread, while the ultimate strength reached 15 and 2.092, respectively.
