Abstract
Parijoto (Medinilla speciosa Blume) is a plant that thrives in highland areas and is commonly found in the Kudus region of Central Java, where it is widely utilized as a medicinal plant. In the development of natural-based drugs, laboratory testing is essential to ensure both efficacy and safety. This study aims to determine the toxicity levels of leaf and fruit extracts of parijoto, obtained through Ultrasonic-Assisted Extraction (UAE), using 48-hour-old Artemia franciscana larvae in a Brine Shrimp Lethality Test (BSLT). The results of the total phenolic content analyses indicate that the leaf extract of parijoto contains higher levels of these compounds (87,8989 mgGAE/g extract) compared to the fruit extract (46,3708 mgGAE/g extract; p ≤ 0,05). The range of toxic concentrations of parijoto leaf and fruit extracts obtained from preliminary tests followed by definitive tests resulted in Lethal Concentration 50 (LC50) values of 57.822 ± 6.578 ppm and 72.662 ± 5.690 ppm, respectively, both of which fall into the toxic category according to Mayer's classification and are classified as highly toxic according to Clarkson's classification.
