Abstract

In Ca Mammae (breast cancer) patients, pain is a common and uncomfortable experience, especially following surgical procedures like mastectomy, which are performed to control the spread of cancer. However, such surgeries often result in postoperative pain, causing discomfort, restlessness, and even mood disturbances in patients. To help manage this pain, one effective non-pharmacological method is the progressive muscle relaxation (PMR) technique. PMR involves the intentional tensing and relaxing of major muscle groups to achieve a state of deep relaxation. In nursing care, the application of PMR aims to determine its effectiveness in reducing pain intensity in patients who have undergone Modified Radical Mastectomy (MRM). The Visual Analog Scale (VAS) was used to assess pain levels. Results showed a decrease in pain intensity from a scale of 8 (severe pain) to 6 (moderate pain) after a 15-minute PMR session in the recovery room. These findings support the use of PMR as a complementary therapy in postoperative care. The implication for nursing practice is clear: enhancing nurses’ skills in non-pharmacological pain management techniques like PMR can improve patient comfort and overall quality of life, making it a valuable addition to postoperative care strategies.
