Abstract

This study explores the phenomenon of verbal abuse among adolescent female players in the online game Mobile Legends. Using a qualitative phenomenological approach, the research delves into the subjective experiences of five participants through in-depth interviews. The findings reveal that verbal abuse is perceived as a complex phenomenon reflecting the competitive culture and gender stereotypes within the gaming community. This abuse impacts the emotional well-being of the victims, lowering their self-confidence and influencing their communication patterns. However, players continue to engage in the game due to intrinsic motivations, such as social interaction, competitive challenges, and community support. Responses to verbal abuse vary, ranging from ignoring the perpetrators to reporting them. The study’s implications include recommendations for developers to enhance penalty systems and create more inclusive gaming environments. This research contributes to the academic understanding of social interactions in digital spaces and provides practical suggestions for reducing toxicity in online games.
