Abstract

A sandwich composite is a type of composite structure consisting of two composite layers and a core. The core material used in this study is balsa wood due to its common availability, natural properties, and low cost. This study was conducted by modeling CSM 300 and pineapple leaf fiber as the outer skin and balsa wood as the core, subjected to strength testing in 2018 using finite element simulation. The sample size used was 127x12.7x4.2 mm. The bending test was performed under a compressive force of 930 N, with variations in layer numbers of 4, 6, 8, and 10, and a fiber entry angle of 45 degrees. After the simulation, further bending tests were conducted using an ideal testing method. The bending test results showed that the highest VOS value recorded was 5.45E+02 MPa, and the smallest displacement was 1.20E+00 mm in the 10-layer sandwich composite. Based on the number of layers and bending test results, the most optimal sample was the 10-layer sandwich composite. The bending test was conductedvaccording to ASTM D790 standards. From the bending test results, an investigation into bending quality was carried out andvthen compared with the bending test simulation. The bending test on the sandwich composite with a composition of 60% fiber and 40% resin showed the highest quality, with a bending strength of 82.53 MPa in physical testing and 84.35 MPa in the simulation
