Abstract
ABSTRACT Objective: Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a global health concern, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Indonesia, ranked seventh globally, is estimated to have 10 million cases. This study, conducted at Besemah Hospital, Pagar Alam City, in 2023, compares the effectiveness of two commonly used drugs, metformin and glimepiride, in managing DM. The goal is to provide clinicians with valuable insights for personalized patient care. Methods: This analytical observational study used a cross-sectional design on type 2 diabetes mellitus patients treated with metformin or glimepiride at Besemah Hospital, Pagar Alam City, in 2023. Data were collected from 84 patients, and the analysis was conducted using the Mann-Whitney Test, a non-parametric test suitable for comparing two independent groups when the dependent variable is not normally distributed. Results: The majority of patients were in the late adulthood age group (40–59 years) with 43 patients (51.2%) and were predominantly female, totaling 57 patients (67.9%). A total of 45 patients (53.6%) had comorbidities, and most had a normal body mass index (40.5%). The proportion of metformin and glimepiride use was balanced, with 42 patients each. The average fasting blood glucose (GDP) was 155.3 mg/dL (SD = 54.6), while the average HbA1C level was 7.5 mmol/mol (SD = 1.17). The average GDP in the metformin group was 161.6 mg/dL, whereas in the glimepiride group, it was 148.9 mg/dL. The Mann-Whitney test showed a p-value of 0.39 (p > 0.05). Conclusion: There was no significant difference in the effectiveness of metformin and glimepiride in reducing fasting blood glucose levels among the patients.
