Abstract

Plastic waste continues to be a significant issue in Indonesia, accounting for 18.55% of the total waste produced. Many households only shred plastic manually, but further processing is difficult because the available equipment is typically used in large-scale industries. This research aims to design and develop a single screw extruder machine for producing plastic pellets with a capacity of 1.7 kg/h, which can be used by small industries or communities for plastic waste processing. The research begins with identifying needs, followed by concept design, design analysis, manufacturing processes, and testing. The result is an extruder machine equipped with a 6-watt, 1250 rpm electric motor, a 1:25 ratio reducer transmission, a concrete screw with an 18 mm diameter, and a barrel made of steel pipe. The overall machine dimensions are 800 × 500 × 600 mm, consuming a total power of 1.221 kW. Testing shows that the machine can produce plastic pellets with a capacity of 1.7 kg/h or approximately 29.58 grams per minute, with a pellet diameter of 3.5 mm. The optimal processing conditions were achieved at a speed of 50 RPM and a temperature of 195 °C, with a heating time of around 12 minutes and 37 seconds. This machine is expected to facilitate plastic waste processing at the household and small industry level, helping to reduce the environmental impact of plastic waste.
