Abstract
This study is intended to analyze the machinability index of composite materials made from glass fiber and epoxy resin based on cutting power, and measure surface roughness as a supporting parameter. The volume fraction variations tested include 60:40, 50:50, and 40:60. The composites were made using the hand lay-up method, and testing was carried out through the turning process using a conventional lathe. The results showed that the 50:50 composition had the highest machinability index of 83.28%, followed by the 60:40 (82.29%) and 40:60 (81.12%) compositions. Surface roughness measurements showed that the 40:60 composition had the lowest surface roughness of 3.37 µm, while the 50:50 and 60:40 compositions had roughness values of 4.27 µm and 4.93 µm, respectively. This study shows that the variation of fiber and resin volume fraction has a effect on cutting power efficiency, with the 50:50 composition providing the best machinability index, while the 40:60 composition produces the smoothest surface.
