Abstract
Excess visceral fat has been strongly associated with chronic low-grade inflammation, which is implicated in the development of various non-communicable diseases. Inflammation can be assessed using markers like leukocyte count, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR). This study aims to examine the relationship between visceral fat and inflammatory markers, specifically leukocyte count, NLR, and PLR, in young, healthy individuals, such as medical students. The study employed a quantitative, cross-sectional design involving 51 Faculty of Medicine Universitas Pembangunan Nasional Veteran Jakarta students selected through simple random sampling. Data were collected by measuring visceral fat using the Tanita MC-980MA and performing hematological assessments with the Alinity HQ system. Statistical analysis used Mann-Whitney U test. The results demonstrated a significant difference in leukocyte count between the normal and high visceral fat groups (p = 0.021). However, no significant differences were observed in NLR (p = 0.614) or PLR (p = 0.761) between the two groups. These findings suggest that visceral fat status is associated with leukocyte count but not with NLR or PLR. The study adds to the evidence that visceral fat influences systemic inflammation, as indicated by an elevated leukocyte count, likely through low-grade inflammatory mechanisms.
