Abstract

Objective Vascular stiffness can affect cognitive function. This study aims to determine the relationship between vascular elasticity and cognitive function in medical students at Universitas Pembangunan Nasional Veteran Jakarta. Method The research used a cross-sectional design and simple random sampling technique. Cognitive function data were collected using the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE), Digit Symbol Substitution Test (DSST), and Digit Span Test (DST) questionnaires, while vascular elasticity was measured using the accelerated photoplethysmography (APG) analyzer SA-3000P. The sample size was 51 individuals who met the criteria of non-smoking students, students with low to moderate stress levels, and students without a history of head trauma/brain hemorrhage, DM, or hypertension. Results Mann-Whitney test results showed significant differences in cognitive function measured by MMSE between vascular elasticity groups (p=0.042). Chi-square test results showed significant differences in cognitive function measured by DSST between vascular elasticity groups (p = 0,039; PR = 1,875; CI = 0,981 – 3,584), but no significant differences in cognitive function measured by DST between vascular elasticity groups (p=0.072). Conclusion There is a significant relationship between vascular elasticity and cognitive function in medical students.
