Abstract
Indonesia, with its tropical climate, provides conditions that support a high incidence of dermatophytosis, a fungal infection commonly caused by Trichophyton rubrum. The treatment generally provided includes ketoconazole and miconazole creams. However long term use of these medications can result in adverse health effects. As a result, people are increasingly turning to medicinal plants, such as the kecombrang plant (Etlingera elatior), which is known for its potential antimicrobial activity due to its high content of flavonoids, phenolics, and terpenoids. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of kecombrang flower extract on the growth of Trichophyton rubrum in vitro. The Antifungal activity was tested using the well-diffusion method. The extraction using 70% ethanol as the solvent. The treatment groups consisted of kecombrang flower extract with concentrations of 5%, 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, and 50%. Ketoconazole was used as the positive control, while distilled water served as the negative control. The data obtained were analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis statistical test and the Mann-Whitney post hoc test. The results revealed the presence of an inhibition zone against the growth of Trichophyton rubrum. The 50% concentration of kecombrang flower extract demonstrates the most effective fungal growth inhibition at 48 hours with an average zone size of 18,3 mm. The Kruskal-Wallis test results showed a value of 0.000 indicating significant differences in the inhibition zones among treatment groups. Kecombrang flower is effective as an antifungal agent, where each increase in concentration is directly proportional to the size of inhibition zone produced.
