Abstract

Objective. High workloads among medical students can reduce physical activity and sleep duration, potentially disrupting vascular function. This study aims to examine the relationship between physical activity, sleep quality, and vascular characteristics in medical students.Method. The study used a cross-sectional design and a total sampling technique. Data on physical activity, sleep quality, and sample characteristics were collected using questionnaires, while vascular characteristics were assessed with an accelerated photoplethysmograph (APG) analyzer, SA-3000P. The subjects consisted of 56 male pre-clinical students, aged at least 18 years, with "good" dietary habits, no history of diabetes or hypertension, no "heavy" or "moderate" smoking habits, and no alcohol consumption exceeding 6.30 ml per day or more than three times per week. Result. Chi-square analysis revealed a significant association between sleep quality and arterial elasticity (p = 0.045; PR = 1.588; 95% CI = 1.011–2.495). Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that physical activity had a stronger association with wave type (OR = 4.671; 95% CI = 1.418–15.387) compared to sleep quality (OR = 2.922; 95% CI = 0.877–9.734) after adjusting for sleep quality. Conclusion. Students need to maintain optimal sleep quality and engage in sufficient physical activity, as both are related to arterial elasticity and wavetype.
