Abstract

Objective The value of VO₂ max is a key indicator of cardiorespiratory fitness, influenced by various factors such as genetics, age, gender, body composition, and physical activity. One essential component of body composition is muscle mass, whose function is based on three main concepts, including muscle strength. Overall muscle strength is commonly assessed through handgrip strength evaluation. Medical students often have low physical activity levels, primarily due to limited time allocated for exercise. Activities with energy expenditure <1.5 MET, such as sitting, lying down, or resting, are classified as sedentary behaviour. This sedentary lifestyle increases the risk of muscle mass reduction and decreased handgrip strength, particularly with aging. This research aims to examine the relationship between muscle mass and handgrip strength with VO₂ max among medical students at UPN “Veteran” Jakarta. Method This research was an observational analytic study with a cross-sectional research design involving medical students of UPN “Veteran” Jakarta who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria and analysed with chi-square and fisher’s exact test. Result There were 98 students taken as a respondent in this research. As many as 49% of the subjects had low muscle mass (p=0.232), and as many as 87,8% of the subjects had normal handgrip strength (p=0.1000). Conclusion Young adults, particularly college students, who are prone to a sedentary lifestyle should understand its impact and recognize the importance of regular exercise to reduce the risk of cardiovascular complications.
