Abstract
An increase in irrational use of antibiotics can lead to an increase in antibiotic resistance, resulting in failure to respond to the therapy given, prolonging the duration of illness, increasing healthcare costs, and even increasing the risk of mortality. This study aimed to determine the pattern of antibiotic prescribing using Gyssens method among adult outpatients of the internal medicine unit at Persahabatan General Hospital period July-September 2023. This is an observational study with a cross-sectional study design using retrospective data collection from patient medical records. The sample in this study was 30 patient medical records who meet the inclusion criteria. The majority of adult outpatients of internal medicine unit who were prescribed antibiotics at Persahabatan Hospital for the period July-September 2023 were male (53%) and in the 51-60 year age group (46.7%). The most common infectious disease diagnosis was HIV with pulmonary TB (16.7%). The most commonly prescribed antibiotic is Levofloxacin 10 (22,2%). Based on the results of antibiotic evaluation using the Gyssens method, 40 (88,8%) antibiotics were prescribed rationally (category 0) and 5 (11,1%) antibiotics were prescribed irrationally (categories I-IV). It can be concluded that 88,8% antibiotic prescribing in adult outpatients of the internal medicine unit at Persahabatan General Hospital period July-September 2023 were prescribed rationally based on Gyssens method.
