Abstract
Dysentery is a diarrheal illness frequently affecting humans due to bacterial infections and environmental factors. In Indonesia, the prevalence of dysentery is highly variable, with approximately 10% of the global population at risk, and the highest prevalence in tropical countries (50-80%). Moringa leaves (Moringa oleifera L.) offer various benefits, including antibacterial properties. The temperature and polarity of the solvent used in the extraction process determine the quality of the extract produced. This study aims to identify the differences in antibacterial activity between 70% and 96% ethanol extracts of Moringa leaves (Moringa oleifera L.) against Staphylococcus aureus and Shigella dysenteriae using the disc diffusion method. The extraction process was carried out using ultrasound assisted extraction at different temperatures (30°C and 40°C) for 30 minutes. The flavonoid content at each temperature was tested for its antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Shigella dysenteriae. The results showed that 70% ethanol extraction at 30°C produced the highest flavonoid content of 15.71 mg QE/g and an inhibition zone diameter of 8.98 mm. Temperature and solvent polarity significantly affected the antibacterial activity of Moringa oleifera extracts, with a significance value of p = 0.368 (p≥0.05). From this study, it can be concluded that Moringa leaf extract has antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Shigella dysenteriae.
